Spotted Schools

A school of blackspotted rubberlips, (aka African grunt) dare a close inspection of our diver, Hans Ngoteya as he braves the dark waters of the Mafia coral reef after sundown. Night dives are always the most exciting, creatures you didn’t see in the daytime come out to play and everyone is out on the reef taking advantage of the security the darkness offers. Creatures that you normally can’t get close to, are suddenly in your face, bedazzled by your shining lights. Our camera’s lights also attract small zooplankton, which then attracts larger fish. It can be quite an immersive experience as the reef begins to incorporate you!
