Rufiji River Delta

The mouth of the great Rufiji River, where the largest and longest river in Tanzania merges with the Indian Ocean, is home to the largest mangrove forest in East Africa. This delta is also the site of a battle fought in 1915 between German and British ships. A German ship, the SMS Königsberg, used the serpentine bends of the delta to hide itself after a close skirmish, and for months British forces attempted to find and sink the ship, which they eventually succeeded in doing. The battle inspired the 1976 Bristish film ‘Shout at the Devil’.
